Preface
The French phenomenologist Maurice Merleau-Ponty once proposed that the body is not a passive material existence, but rather a way for us to be present in the perceptual world.
Architecture sets up space through structure, proportion and volume, while clothing envelops the skin through fabric, cutting and silhouette. As the extension of the body, clothing is not merely an external decoration of the skin, but a space that coexists with the body. While it shapes the form, it also reshapes theway in which human perceives the world. Soft fabrics intertwine with hard structural elements, and flowing materials are juxtaposed with stable silhouettes. Clothing creates a tension on the surface of the body, making the body both the subject and the constructor of space. The fabric resembles architectural materials, carrying structure, proportion and volume, transforming clothing into a mobile architecture and an extension of the body's perception of the world.
This exhibition, titled "CLOTH AS SPACE" presents a series of clothing works full of deconstruction and sculptural quality. They utilize fabric as structure and pleats as a language to open up a new bodily poetics. Clothing is no longer just a superficial layer covering the skin; it is the space and perceptual medium extending from the body, the carrier of the dialogue between the body and the world. As you walk, pause, or gaze at these works in the exhibition hall, you will become a part of these "wearable architectures." Here, clothing, body, and space form a symbiotic relationship, with each step taken constructing and reshaping the boundaries and experiences of perception.
